I like graffiti. Always have. I guess it has a lot to do with the freeform expression… the ability to rush a beautiful piece of rebellion onto a surface without getting caught. At school, I used to express myself quite liberally in wood carvings on my desks.
Anyway, over the last few years, graffiti artists have been making Port of Spain their canvas of choice. I’ve chronicled some of their exploits in the public space before (some examples here, here and here).
I’ve been noticing a new artist on the scene these days… artistes, probably. An artist or a collective going by the name of “HOWOK”…
Click the pix to see more of what they’ve been up to…

Artists leaving messages for each other on the wall.
One didn’t sign his work, and the other was impressed enough to advise that the work should be signed.
The reply?
“Nuf Respect“ … although, in this context, he’s really saying “Thanks for the heads up”. Then you see the word “Jumbie” written twice…
This is all assuming that both artists are male to begin with, of course.

“When you fall, you’ll fall alone
But in your gett’n up, pick someone up with U.”
“U”
It looks like the artist has the beginnings of a lit deya (in brown), behind the words in blue. I wonder if its finished now.
*makes mental note to check*

I really don’t know what else to call it, as there are so many images present!
On the lower left, there’s a face. Right next to it is a sailing ship (an armada?).
There are 2 other faces surrounding the ship, and the man on the right seems to be holding a bow in his right hand, with a quiver of arrows on his back. On top, the bow becomes a sun setting/rising over a hill top, while 2 men on horses ride by.
Lest we forget, the ship seems to be passing land, which is denoted by the hills behind the sails.
I’m sure if I visit it now, I’ll see something I didn’t before.
I wonder what the artist calls this piece?

“Unity is what we need”, says the graffiti mural.
That’s a Hibiscus flower on the left and a Humming Bird on the right.
I took this really early in the morning, around 2 or 3 am. I didn’t actually get out of my bed at that hour to take these shots! I was just on my way home from a weekend lime and I decided to take the long way home.
I think that street art has a different ‘vibe’ at night, from when you see it in the day. At night, you’re actually seeing it the way the artist saw it when it was first drawn…
Hmmm… I need to take a trip up to Asa Wright. I’m long overdue.
Peace and Rice,
